Harry Wilson Watrous (1857-1940) - Academic American portrait painter, who had at one time a great success. During his distinguished career, he equally successfully created landscapes, still lifes and portraits. The artist has achieved much success in creating idealized portraits of women.

The artist was born in San Francisco and raised in New York, he studied at a private school in New York. Starting from 1881, Watrous for five years traveled to many countries, including, in southern Spain and Morocco. Then he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Great influence on the early work has Watrous painting by Jean-Louis Meissonier. Watrous at the beginning of his academic career was known as the creator of genre paintings, depicting people in period costumes in various interiors of the era.

Approximately in 1905, Watrous began to lose his sight and began to create more innovative picture. From 1905 to 1918, specializing in painting Watrous become seductive woman in stylized costumes. In his compositions, he skillfully used the contrast of light and shadow.
